LIFT Off: Lightweight Frames

The Michigan Manufacturing Technology Center, in a cooperative design effort utilizing Manufacturing USA Institutes including LIFT, IACMI and America Makes and Manufacturing Extension Partnerships, including the Tennessee MEP, engineered a contemporary multi-material lightweight frame to meet a need expressed by Specialty Equipment Manufacturing Association (SEMA) members.

Gregg Peterson, a MMTC engineer embedded at LIFT, has directed the project and presented information on the frame and the design process during the June LIFT Off webinar.

Coming up in July, Mike Spodar of Coldwater Machine Company, will highlight the benefits of friction welding for lightweighting applications – including lower distortion, better weld integrity and the ability to weld dissimilar material combinations, to name a few.
