MTU and LIFT Host Second Annual Manufacturing for Tomorrow Bootcamp, Empowering the Next Generation of Makers

Michigan Technological University (MTU) and LIFT came together to host the second annual Manufacturing for Tomorrow Bootcamp, a weeklong immersive experience held at LIFT’s Detroit headquarters and sponsored by BuildSubmarines.com. The bootcamp welcomed high school students from several schools from the Upper Peninsula and metro Detroit, MI to dive into the world of advanced manufacturing and engineering.
This year’s program put a stronger focus on materials science, giving students hands-on experience with processes and testing like metal hardness and heat treatment, welding, 3D printing, CNC programming, and robotics.
“Materials science is at the forefront of innovation and very approachable for students,” said Cassy Tefft de Munoz, Executive Director of MTU’s Center for Educational Outreach. “It’s something they can see, touch, and conceptualize – we’re tapping into that curiosity and helping it grow.”
Throughout the week, students also visited leading industry partners including Weldaloy, Kawasaki Robotics, and the Drone Pilot Academy at Michigan Central, further expanding their understanding of real-world applications and career paths in manufacturing.
The impact of the program was clear: 94% of students reported gaining confidence in themselves and their abilities, and nearly 90% shared that they are now more interested in a manufacturing career pathway than before attending.
“The Manufacturing for Tomorrow program is a wonderful opportunity to help students like me explore the field of STEM,” said one participating student. “I’ve really enjoyed the field trips, robots, and simulations which have all contributed to my knowledge in manufacturing as a whole. I especially loved learning about drones as I plan to join a search and rescue drone team in my community to help with aerial imaging and disaster relief.”
A longtime partner of LIFT, MTU is committed to inspiring future engineers and innovators through hands-on programs that encourage college exploration and career awareness. “Michigan Tech’s identity is rooted in immersive, residential learning in Houghton,” added Tefft de Munoz. “Through our partnership with LIFT, we’re able to extend that experience to Detroit, creating access to cutting-edge learning environments for students who may not otherwise have these opportunities.”
By combining MTU’s educational expertise with LIFT’s state-of-the-art manufacturing environment, the Manufacturing for Tomorrow Bootcamp is helping shape the next generation of innovators, problem-solvers, and industry leaders. Together, MTU and LIFT are not only exposing students to the possibilities within advanced manufacturing, but actively building a more inclusive, skilled, and future-ready workforce for Michigan and beyond.
