LIFT Puerto Rico Learning Lab Surpasses 1,000 Student Visitors
New milestone underscores the growing demand for technical education and career pathways in manufacturing on the island
Caguas, Puerto Rico – LIFT, the Department of Defense-supported national advanced materials and manufacturing innovation institute, has officially welcomed more than 1,000 students to its Puerto Rico Learning Lab since its launch this past April.
Students from across the island, some traveling more than 90 minutes, have participated in the Learning Lab’s hands-on programs. Their commitment highlights both the urgent need for access to high-quality technical education and the growing enthusiasm for careers in manufacturing, robotics, and engineering. By the end of 2025, the Learning Lab expects to see 1,500 total students.
Inside the Learning Lab, students explore cutting-edge tools including virtual welders, robotics, electrical and control systems, and mechanical modules. These immersive experiences bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world applications, sparking curiosity while building early exposure to the skills required in today’s rapidly evolving global economy.
“Surpassing 1,000 student visitors is more than a number – it represents a movement to empower Puerto Rico’s next generation of innovators and makers,” said Dr. Robert Shaner, Chief Workforce Development Officer, LIFT. “Each student who walks through our doors is taking an important step toward shaping the future of the island’s workforce and contributing to national competitiveness.”
This milestone reflects the Learning Lab’s role as a vital resource for preparing students to thrive in advanced manufacturing careers. As LIFT celebrates this achievement, the organization remains committed to expanding access, welcoming students from every corner of Puerto Rico, and ensuring that opportunity and innovation continue to advance hand in hand.
